Practical tools for measured work
TV Viewing Distance Calculator
Compare your current seat position with editable viewing-angle distances for any TV size.
Treat these as comparison points, then choose the distance that feels comfortable with your content.
How it works
How to use it: enter TV diagonal and your actual eye-to-screen distance. The tool shows the current horizontal viewing angle and distances for three editable target angles.
Formula. Screen width is derived from a 16:9 diagonal. Distance = width / (2 x tan(angle / 2)).
Example. A 65-inch 16:9 TV is about 56.7 inches wide. A 36-degree horizontal angle places the viewer about 87.2 inches away.
Current-input example
The result above uses these exact values. This snapshot is included when the page is printed so the output can be checked against the original measurements.
- TV diagonal
- 65 in
- Current eye-to-screen distance
- 96 in
- Wide-room reference angle
- 30 deg
- Immersive reference angle
- 36 deg
- Cinema-style reference angle
- 40 deg
Primary result: Current viewing angle: 32.9 deg.
Before using the result
- Measure from the datum or reference edge described by this tool, and do not mix inside, outside and centerline dimensions.
- Keep inputs in the displayed units and preserve more precision than the final cutting or purchasing tolerance requires.
- When the result is close to a limit, verify it with a test piece, field measurement, manufacturer drawing or qualified project professional.
Limitations
Angle targets are planning references, not comfort standards for every viewer. Measure to the screen face, and account for reclining posture, subtitles, eyesight and personal preference.
Frequently asked questions
Why not give one perfect distance?
There is no universal preference. The editable angle comparison makes the trade-off visible instead of hiding it behind one rule.
