This page explains how ToolHuts calculates results, which assumptions the tools make, how calculations are checked, and how to report a problem.
Who runs this
ToolHuts is an independently run project - a single collection of calculators and printable templates maintained as an ongoing product, not a large company. We don't claim professional engineering, legal or safety certification for any result. Where a result touches a building code, a carrier's billing rule, or a manufacturing tolerance, the tool says so and tells you to verify it against your actual local code, carrier or supplier - see "What this site can't know" below.
Units and conventions
Internally, every calculation works in a fixed set of canonical units - millimetres for length, degrees for angles, litres for volume, grams for weight - and converts to whatever unit a tool displays (inches, feet, cubic yards, US gallons, and so on). Every tool page states the units it expects for each input next to the field itself, not just in a legend elsewhere on the page. Where a term is genuinely ambiguous across regions - tire vs tyre, baluster vs spindle, dimensional vs volumetric weight - the tool's own page defines it in place.
Diagrams and printable templates
Diagrams and printable templates use the same millimetre coordinate data as their calculations, so the picture is rendered from the result rather than redrawn separately. Full-size PDF and SVG templates include a calibration mark. Measure it after printing at 100% and stop if its physical size is wrong.
How results are checked
Most of ToolHuts' calculation engines - including the shared spacing solver behind the baluster, fence and even-spacing tools, and the formulas behind bend allowance, cone pattern, board feet, stairs, roof pitch, tire comparison, wheel fitment, CBM, dimensional weight, pallet layout, box dieline, pipe notch, miter angle and paper scaling - are covered by an automated test suite checked against independently worked examples, so a change to one calculator can't silently break its numbers. Test coverage is expanding tool by tool. Each "How it works" section includes a worked example so you can check the arithmetic independently. This does not replace your own judgment: always sanity-check a result against a second source for anything safety-critical.
What this site can't know
No calculator here can know your specific vehicle's clearances, your local building code and its current edition, your carrier's current billing divisor, your material supplier's exact tolerances, or your actual printer's margins. Every tool's "Limitations" section says plainly what it does and doesn't model, and where a commonly cited number (a typical riser height, a common K-factor range, a standard pallet footprint) is shown, it's labelled as a starting point to confirm locally - not a pass/fail result from the calculator.
