Practical tools for measured work
TV Size & Viewing Distance Calculator
Find a TV diagonal from viewing distance and angle, then compare three screen sizes in a to-scale room view.
Compare several angles and choose for your comfort
The diagram compares physical screen widths at the same seat position; it does not recommend a TV brand or model.
How it works
How to use it: measure from your eyes to the screen plane, choose a viewing angle, and compare three real TV diagonals. The solver works both ways: it finds a diagonal for your room and shows the distance required for the middle comparison size.
Formula. Screen width comes from diagonal and aspect ratio. Horizontal angle = 2 x atan(width / (2 x distance)); solving that equation for width gives the recommended diagonal.
Example. At 96 inches and a 36 degree target, a 16:9 screen is about 67.8 inches diagonally. A 65-inch display produces roughly a 34.7 degree horizontal angle.
Current-input example
The result above uses these exact values. This snapshot is included when the page is printed so the output can be checked against the original measurements.
- Eye-to-screen distance
- 96 in
- Target horizontal viewing angle
- 36 deg
- Compare TV 1
- 55 in
- Compare TV 2
- 65 in
- Compare TV 3
- 75 in
Primary result: Diagonal at target angle: 71.6 in.
Before using the result
- Measure from the datum or reference edge described by this tool, and do not mix inside, outside and centerline dimensions.
- Keep inputs in the displayed units and preserve more precision than the final cutting or purchasing tolerance requires.
- When the result is close to a limit, verify it with a test piece, field measurement, manufacturer drawing or qualified project professional.
Limitations
Viewing-angle guidance is a preference and planning reference, not a guarantee of comfort. Content, eyesight, subtitles, room layout and personal taste matter. Screen sizes are nominal and bezel dimensions vary.
Frequently asked questions
Does resolution change the viewing angle?
No. Physical size and distance set the angle. Resolution affects how visible pixels or fine detail may be, which is handled separately by the 4K/8K distance tool.
Should distance be measured from the sofa or the wall?
Measure from the viewer's eye position to the front surface of the screen.
