Practical tools for measured work
4K & 8K Viewing Distance Calculator
Compare 1080p, 4K and 8K angular pixel density at your actual screen size and seat.
Editable acuity/detail reference, not a medical threshold
How it works
How to use it: enter screen size, viewing distance and an editable pixels-per-degree comparison target. The tool shows angular pixel density for 1080p, 4K and 8K and the distance where each reaches that target.
Formula. PPD = horizontal pixel count / horizontal viewing angle. Target distance is found by solving for the angle equal to pixels / target PPD.
Example. At the same size and seat, 8K has twice the horizontal PPD of 4K and four times that of 1080p.
Current-input example
The result above uses these exact values. This snapshot is included when the page is printed so the output can be checked against the original measurements.
- Screen diagonal
- 65 in
- Viewing distance
- 96 in
- Comparison target
- 60 pixels/deg
Primary result: Viewing angle: 32.9 deg.
Before using the result
- Measure from the datum or reference edge described by this tool, and do not mix inside, outside and centerline dimensions.
- Keep inputs in the displayed units and preserve more precision than the final cutting or purchasing tolerance requires.
- When the result is close to a limit, verify it with a test piece, field measurement, manufacturer drawing or qualified project professional.
Limitations
PPD describes geometry, not whether a person can perceive a difference. Vision, contrast, compression, mastering, motion, scaling and content detail all matter. Do not interpret the target as a clinical eyesight threshold.
Frequently asked questions
Does farther always mean better?
Farther increases angular pixel density but reduces immersion. Use this together with viewing angle rather than optimizing one number alone.
