Brightness is the ideal screen-luminance calculation using delivered lumens. Outdoors, stray light and the lack of a dark enclosure can reduce perceived contrast much more than this number suggests.
How it works
How to use it: enter screen, audience-depth and measured or conservatively estimated delivered lumens. Edit near and far angle targets.
Formula. Viewing angle uses screen width and seat distance. Foot-lamberts = delivered lumens x gain / screen area in square feet.
Example. A 150-inch 16:9 screen is about 10.9 ft wide and 6.1 ft high.

Limitations
This cannot determine wind safety, rigging, weather protection, electrical safety or local rules. Moonlight, street lights, screen material and projector calibration affect contrast. Secure outdoor screens to manufacturer specifications and never use unsafe improvised anchors.
Frequently asked questions
Can I project before sunset?
Usually with much weaker contrast. Projected black is only as dark as the illuminated screen, so waiting for darkness often matters more than adding modest projector output.
