How it works
Direct answer. This calculates a recommended pocket-hole screw length from the geometry of your joint - top workpiece thickness, jig angle, and how deep you want the screw to reach into the base workpiece - and warns if that screw would blow through the base's far face.
Method. The jig angle is measured from the line perpendicular to the workpiece face (0 degrees would be a hole drilled straight through the thickness). Crossing the top piece at that angle lengthens the drilled path: path through top = top thickness / cos(angle). The pilot hole then continues in a straight line past the joint and into the base to your target penetration depth: ideal length = path through top + target penetration. Because screws are only sold in specific lengths, that ideal value is rounded up to the next multiple of your editable rounding increment to give the recommended length. The tool then works backward from that rounded length to report exactly how deep it actually reaches into the base, and compares that to the base thickness minus your requested safety margin.
Worked example. A 19 mm top piece, a 15 degree jig angle, and a 20 mm target penetration give a path through the top of about 19.67 mm and an ideal pilot length of about 39.67 mm. Rounded up to the nearest 5 mm, that is a 40 mm screw, which reaches about 20.33 mm into the base - safe with plenty of margin in a 38 mm thick base, but a blow-through risk in anything much thinner than about 23 mm.

Limitations
The jig angle, both thicknesses, target penetration, safety margin and rounding increment are all inputs you set for your own hardware - none of them are hardcoded standards. Pocket-hole jig angles vary by brand and model; measure your own jig (or check its manual) rather than assuming 15 degrees is exact for yours. Screw catalogs vary between suppliers and are not sold in a single universal set of lengths, so treat the recommended length as a purchasing target to round to the nearest length your supplier actually stocks, not a part number.
The model treats the penetration into the base as a straight extension of the same drilled path, which is accurate for typical jig angles (roughly 9-20 degrees) but becomes a rougher approximation at unusually steep angles. It also does not model the screw head's countersink recess, thread pitch, self-tapping tip length, pilot-hole counterbore depth, wood species/density, grain direction, or clamping force - all of which affect a real joint's holding strength and whether a screw will split the wood. Always verify fit and screw selection on scrap material before committing to a workpiece, and back the drill guide off if you feel it bottom out.
Frequently asked questions
Why is 15 degrees only a default and not a fixed value?
Pocket-hole jig angles differ by brand and model. 15 degrees is a common starting point across various systems, not a specification for any particular jig. Enter the angle for your own jig, or measure a test cut if you are unsure.
What does 'target penetration' actually mean?
It is how far, measured along the screw's own axis beyond the joint line between the two pieces, you want the screw tip to travel into the base workpiece. Deeper penetration generally improves holding strength but increases blow-through risk in thin base material.
Why does the recommended screw length not exactly match my target?
Real screws are only available in specific lengths. The tool rounds the shortest theoretical length up to the next multiple of your chosen increment, then reports the slightly deeper penetration that rounding actually produces.
The result says it would blow through - what should I change?
Reduce the target penetration, use a smaller rounding increment (so less length gets added by rounding), or use a thicker base workpiece. You can also increase the safety margin input to get an earlier, more conservative warning next time.
