How it works

How to use it: enter your document's final trim size, the bleed amount your printer requires, and a safe-area margin to keep important text and logos away from the trim edge. Download the template as an SVG or PDF and use it as a guide layer, or print it to check your own file's setup against it.

What each box means. The bleed box (outer, dashed) is how big your artwork file should actually be - background colors and images should extend all the way to this edge so small trimming variance never leaves a white sliver. The trim box (solid) is where the page is actually cut. The safe area (inner, dashed) is where text and other important content should stay inside, since anything closer to the trim edge risks being cut off by normal trimming tolerance. Crop marks at each corner show a printer exactly where to cut.

Formula.

Bleed size = trim size + 2 × bleed
Safe area = trim size − 2 × safe margin

Worked example. With the defaults (A4 trim 210 × 297 mm, 3 mm bleed, 5 mm safe margin): bleed size = 210 + 2×3 = 216 mm by 297 + 2×3 = 303 mm, so your artwork file should be 216 × 303 mm. Safe area = 210 − 2×5 = 200 mm by 297 − 2×5 = 287 mm, so keep text inside 200 × 287 mm, centered on the page.

Before using the result

  • Measure from the datum or reference edge described by this tool, and do not mix inside, outside and centerline dimensions.
  • Keep inputs in the displayed units and preserve more precision than the final cutting or purchasing tolerance requires.
  • When the result is close to a limit, verify it with a test piece, field measurement, manufacturer drawing or qualified project professional.

Limitations

Bleed, safe-area and crop-mark conventions vary by printer and print method - always confirm your specific printer or press's required bleed amount, mark style and mark offset before sending a final file. This template uses commonly seen defaults (3 mm bleed is widespread, but some printers ask for 2 mm or 5 mm) and a generic crop-mark placement, not a specific vendor's exact specification.

This produces a guide/reference sheet, not a print-ready press file - it does not manage color profiles, registration marks for multi-color presses, or a specific file format's bleed-box/ trim-box metadata (as used in professional PDF/X workflows).

Frequently asked questions

Do I need bleed for a document that will only ever be printed at home?

Usually not - home and office printers typically can't print to the paper edge anyway, so there's no trimming step and no risk of a white sliver. Bleed matters when a design is professionally trimmed after printing, or laid out on a larger sheet with other jobs.

What bleed amount should I use?

3 mm is a very commonly used default for commercial print, but always check your specific printer or press's requirements - some ask for 2 mm, others 5 mm (about 1/8 in in imperial-based specs). Using more than required is safe; using less can risk a visible white edge after trimming.

Why is my design getting cut off even though I added bleed?

Bleed only protects the edge of the page from trimming variance - it doesn't protect content near the edge itself. Keep any text, logos or important detail inside the safe area, which is inset from the trim line specifically to survive normal cutting tolerance.
