How it works

How to use it: choose the final frame centre height, then measure from the frame's top edge down to the fixing point while the wire or hardware is carrying its load. For two hooks, also enter their centre-to-centre spacing.

Formula. Frame top = centre height + half the frame height. Fixing height = frame top - loaded hardware drop. A centered frame starts at (wall width - frame width) / 2; two hooks sit half their spacing either side of the wall centre.

Worked example. An 800 mm-high frame centered at 1450 mm has its top at 1850 mm. With a loaded hook drop of 100 mm, mark the wall at 1750 mm from the floor.

Before using the result

  • Measure from the datum or reference edge described by this tool, and do not mix inside, outside and centerline dimensions.
  • Keep inputs in the displayed units and preserve more precision than the final cutting or purchasing tolerance requires.
  • When the result is close to a limit, verify it with a test piece, field measurement, manufacturer drawing or qualified project professional.

Limitations

Measure the actual loaded wire sag and the hook's real support point. Frames, wires and wall fixings can move under load. Confirm wall structure, fixing capacity and hidden services before drilling; this calculator does not select safe hardware.

Frequently asked questions

Why measure the wire while pulled tight?

Loose wire sits higher than it will on the wall. Pulling it toward the intended hook gives a more realistic loaded drop.

Is this the same as the Gallery Wall Planner?

No. This finds fixing coordinates for one chosen frame position. Use Gallery Wall Planner to compose and space several frames.
