How it works

For a given opening and baluster width, the tool finds the smallest number of balusters whose resulting gap does not exceed your maximum, then distributes that gap evenly - including at both ends - so the layout is symmetric. In “exact count” mode, it instead divides the opening evenly for your chosen number of balusters.

Limitations

The result only checks the maximum gap you entered. It does not identify the legal limit for your jurisdiction, occupancy, stair or guard condition. Confirm the correct requirement before construction.

FAQ

Why isn't the gap exactly my maximum?
The tool always uses the fewest balusters that keep every gap at or under your maximum - the actual gap is usually a little smaller so it divides evenly.
Does this apply to fence pickets too?
Yes - the same even-spacing method works for pickets, spindles, or any evenly spaced object; see the Fence Picket Spacing tool.
