Painting Labor Per-Square-Foot Calculator

Price painting application labor per square foot per coat and estimate crew time from an editable productivity rate.

sq ft

Use net wall/ceiling area after the deductions you actually allow.

$

Masking, patching, sanding and setup priced separately from rolling or spraying.

The price and duration are independent checks: the square-foot rate prices the work, while your productivity assumption estimates the schedule.

How it works

How it works: net paintable area is multiplied by coats and your labor rate per square foot per coat. A separate prep allowance is then added.

Schedule = area × coats ÷ productivity ÷ crew size ÷ hours per day. Calibrate both the rate and productivity from completed jobs with similar prep, access and finish requirements.

Before using the result

  • Measure from the datum or reference edge described by this tool, and do not mix inside, outside and centerline dimensions.
  • Keep inputs in the displayed units and preserve more precision than the final cutting or purchasing tolerance requires.
  • When the result is close to a limit, verify it with a test piece, field measurement, manufacturer drawing or qualified project professional.

Limitations

This is a labor-only planning estimate. It excludes paint and sundries, travel, lifts or scaffolding, overtime, taxes, overhead and profit unless those are already embedded in your entered labor rate. Doors, trim, cabinets and detailed cutting-in are usually better priced as separate items.

Frequently asked questions

Does two coats double the paintable area?

It doubles the coated area used for application labor and production time. The one-time prep allowance is not doubled.
