Print or export at 100% scale, verify the calibration mark, and test the settings on scrap from the same sheet.
How it works
Test layout: this ideal-hinge model estimates kerf count and spacing. Measure the blade's actual kerf, enter the bend geometry and test the result on scrap from the same sheet before cutting the workpiece. The output gives equally spaced saw lines across the bend zone and exports a full-size marking strip.
Formula. Bend zone = inner radius x sweep in radians. Each closed rectangular kerf is treated as a small hinge with angle 2 x atan(kerf / (2 x cut depth)). The target sweep divided by that angle gives the estimated cut count; the lines are then spread across the bend zone.
Worked example. A 100 mm radius through 90 degrees has a 157.08 mm inner bend zone. With 12 mm material, 2 mm web and a 3.2 mm kerf, the cut depth is 10 mm; the calculated cut count and spacing distribute the required opening over that zone.
Current-input example
The result above uses these exact values. This snapshot is included when the page is printed so the output can be checked against the original measurements.
- Target inner radius
- 100 mm
- Bend angle
- 90 deg
- Material thickness
- 12 mm
- Measured blade kerf
- 3.2 mm
- Remaining web thickness
- 2 mm
- Strip width
- 100 mm
Primary result: Kerf cuts: 5.
Before using the result
- Measure from the datum or reference edge described by this tool, and do not mix inside, outside and centerline dimensions.
- Keep inputs in the displayed units and preserve more precision than the final cutting or purchasing tolerance requires.
- When the result is close to a limit, verify it with a test piece, field measurement, manufacturer drawing or qualified project professional.
Limitations
Kerf bending is material-dependent. Veneer construction, grain direction, moisture, adhesive, blade runout and springback change the real result. This geometry is a starting layout, not a promise of finished radius.
Always test on scrap from the same sheet. Stop if the face veneer cracks or the remaining web becomes unsafe.
Frequently asked questions
Should I use the blade width printed on the blade?
No. Cut a slot in scrap and measure its actual width; tooth set and runout often make the real kerf different.
Which face receives the cuts?
The cuts normally go on the inside of the bend, leaving the outside face intact. Confirm the intended grain and veneer orientation first.
