How it works
How to use it: enter your room size, table shape and dimensions, and your chair width. The tool gives two seat counts - a comfortable everyday spacing and a tighter spacing for occasional extra guests - plus whether the table and its pull-back clearance actually fit your room.
Formula. Each seat needs a "pitch" along the table edge - chair width plus elbow room: pitch = chair width + elbow room. For a rectangular table, seats = 2 × floor(table length ÷ pitch) + end seats (two end seats are counted only when the table is wide enough, roughly 700 mm+, to seat someone comfortably at each end). For a round table, seats = floor(π × diameter ÷ pitch), since the seating positions wrap around the circumference. Required room size is the table's footprint plus pull-back clearance on every side.
Worked example. With the defaults (rectangular, 2000 × 1000 mm table, 450 mm chairs): comfortable pitch = 450 + 150 = 600 mm → 2 × floor(2000 ÷ 600) + 2 = 2×3+2 = 8 comfortable seats. Tight pitch = 450 + 50 = 500 mm → 2 × floor(2000 ÷ 500) + 2 = 2×4+2 = 10 tight seats. Required room = (1000 + 2×900) × (2000 + 2×900) = 2800 × 3800 mm, which fits inside the default 3600 × 4200 mm room with margin to spare.
Limitations
Elbow-room and pull-back figures are commonly cited planning guidelines, not a universal standard - actual comfortable spacing depends on chair style, place-setting size, and personal preference. Treat both seat counts as planning estimates, and mock up the layout with tape on the floor before buying furniture for a tight room.
This does not account for door swings, walkways to other furniture, a table leaf/extension mechanism, bench seating (which fits differently than individual chairs), or a non-rectangular room shape.
Frequently asked questions
Why does a round table sometimes seat more than a similarly-sized rectangular one?
A circle's full circumference is usable for seating with no wasted corners, while a rectangular table's corners are typically unused space between the long-side seats and the end seats. For the same footprint, round tables often seat comparably or better.
How much pull-back clearance do I actually need?
A commonly cited comfortable figure is around 900 mm (about 3 ft) behind a chair so someone can push back and stand without bumping a wall or another chair; tighter rooms sometimes work with less, but sitting down and standing up gets awkward. Measure your actual chair's pulled-back depth if you have one.
What if my room is too tight?
Try a smaller table, a round table (often more space-efficient for the same seat count), fewer seats, or bench seating along one side, which typically needs less pull-back clearance than individual chairs.
