PPI describes the panel itself. PPD includes viewing distance and horizontal field of view, so it is the more relevant angular-density comparison between different screen sizes and seats.

Funktionsweise

How to use this screen PPD calculator: enter your monitor or TV's native pixel dimensions, physical diagonal and eye-to-screen distance. Any aspect ratio is supported.

PPD vs PPI. PPI measures pixels packed into each physical inch of the panel and does not change when you move. PPD measures pixels across one degree of vision, so it combines resolution, screen size and viewing distance. Use PPI to compare panel density; use PPD to compare how detailed two screens appear from their actual seats.

Formula. PPI = diagonal pixels / diagonal inches. PPD = horizontal pixels / horizontal viewing angle.

Monitor example. A 27-inch 3840 x 2160 monitor is about 163 PPI. At a 24-inch viewing distance it spans about 52 degrees horizontally and provides roughly 74 PPD. Moving farther away raises PPD because the same pixels occupy a smaller visual angle.

How to interpret PPD. 60 PPD is a useful comparison reference, not a hard quality threshold. A high-contrast still image, text rendering, eyesight, display scaling and subpixel layout can all change what a viewer resolves.

Vor Verwendung des Ergebnisses

  • Measure from the datum or reference edge described by this tool, and do not mix inside, outside and centerline dimensions.
  • Keep inputs in the displayed units and preserve more precision than the final cutting or purchasing tolerance requires.
  • When the result is close to a limit, verify it with a test piece, field measurement, manufacturer drawing or qualified project professional.

Einschränkungen

PPD is a geometric density, not a complete image-quality score. Eyesight, subpixel layout, scaling, antialiasing, contrast, motion and source quality matter. Nominal resolution may not equal resolved detail.

Häufig gestellte Fragen

What is the difference between PPD and PPI?

PPI is a fixed physical property of the screen. PPD is angular density at a particular viewing distance, so it changes when the viewer moves closer or farther away.

Is 60 PPD always enough?

It is a common comparison reference, not a universal vision threshold. Content, eyesight and contrast affect whether more density is visible.

Why does monitor PPD increase with viewing distance?

The screen occupies fewer degrees of your field of view as you move away, so more of its fixed pixel count falls within each degree.
